Mother's Day is the time to thank your mother and/or your wife and show your appreciation. Flowers are the most popular gifts for mother's day. If you pick up flowers at your local florist or supermarket it is best to go one to two days before instead of the day of to make sure you pick up high quality flowers. This is especially true if you plan to buy them at supermarkets or other places that are not flower specialists as their stock often runs thin and sometimes completely runs out by mother's day.
There are many popular flowers out there and the variety has grown over the past 30 years. Today there are over 50 types of flowers sold nationwide. These are the most popular flowers for Mother's Day:
1. Mixed Buoquets - huge variety but the most popular includes a few carnations, daisies and 1 to 2 sunflowers for brilliances.
2. Tulips - The most poular flower in the world for Mother's Day. Tulips have been widly popular throughout history and are a comfortable flower with a distinctive shape and the most brilliant full colors of any flower in the Mother's Day category.
3. Carnations - A versatile flower that blooms in a variety of patterns and colors, these are a favorite mainstain.
4. Roses - The eternal symbol of love, the rose has migrated over from Valentine's Day to become very popular for Mother's Day. Recent years has seen the rise in non-red colors such as yellow, pink, and white. Once the most expensive, they have come down in price but they are still the highest priced choice.
5. Sunflowers - Known for their symbol of warmth and radiance, sunflowers represent loyalty and ingenuity. They are unique due to their vase stores of nourishment for bees dovetailed with a brilliant color. Originated in the American plains in 1,000 B.C., the Sunflower is truly an All-American gift.
6. Freesia - The most popular fragrant flower is also a popular choice for Mother's Day weekend. The flower is named after German physician Freidrich Freese. They have a distinctive upward pointing bell shape with a striking citrus scent. The red and pink variations are the strongest scent while the yellow and white variations are the most popular.
7. Orchids - Known for their beauty, and their exotic and harmonious look, orchids come in an astounding variety. With over 25,000 subspecies, orchids are the largest family of flowering plants.
8. Daffodils - Symbolizing fresh start and rebirth, daffodils are synoymous with the arrival of Spring in many countries. The gift of daffodils ensures happiness and are also a common anniversary flower and birth flower in Europe.

. Chrysanthemums - With a history dating to antiquity in Greece, Chrysanthemums symbolize optimism and joy. The flower's name means golden flower in Greek as "chrys" means gold, which the original strain's color. Their light diasy-like petals come in full bloom for only a short period of time. Chrysanthemums are used as a type of tea in Asia.
10. Lilies - The Lily's original use was for funerals and ceremonies honoring the dead. They have come a long way and have migrated to become a top flower for Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. It also helps to be known as the "May birth flower" which fits nicely with the Mother's Day holiday.

. Irises - The Iris symbolizes faith, hope and courage and had strong use in Europe during times of war to symbolize hope. Similar to pandora opening the box, one can draw the analogy that the "hope that will guide man through the ages" is symbolic of the Iris. Although the Iris comes in dozens of colors, the dark blue and violet versions are the most popular.
12. Non-flowered foilage plants - Rather than a buoquet of flowers many mothers are receiving indoor plants on a pot as an alternative. Everything from non-flowered plants that will soon bloom to ferns and bonzai trees, these are great for mothers to nurture and see grow. These plants also have the advantage of longer duration as many flowers do wither after a week or two. Plus they can be transplanted to the backyard or frontyard.
